In light of the most resent school shooting, and a deep reflection on a history of gun violence, the United States is finally beginning to realize that they should perhaps rethink their leniency with gun regulations. There are many different ways to come at this debate, but you want to know what I think they should do? Everyone should place their guns in one big pile, light them on fire, melt them down and turn them into something that does not have the potential to take human life. It may not seem realistic, but it’s better than some of the things the NRA are proposing.
Without even a moments hesitation, the National Rifles Association made their position on this issue very clear: they want armed security officers placed in every school! In other words, their plan for decreasing gun violence is to bring in more people with guns. Is there not a saying that goes something along the lines of ‘you can’t fight fire with fire’?
President Obama has once again made the suggestion of banning the purchase and ownership of automatic weapons. This is something that was put on the table before, but it never turned into anything more than words. Hopefully it takes on a more corporeal form this time around.
People like to argue that it’s not the guns that kill people, but the people themselves that kill each other. Well, I won’t argue that the people are mostly to blame, but arming them with weapons doesn’t exactly help. Something needs to be done, and it needs to be done now, before children no longer become excited, but fearful about the prospect of going to school.
If you have a particular position on the matter, or would just like to make some comments or critiques, feel free to do so in the comments. I would love to hear from all different sides of this issue.
