Today, we remember the 14 women who were killed at the Polytéchnique school in Montreal on December 6th, 1989. They were shot by one of the students who attended the university, who afterwards shot himself. His name was Marc Lepine, and he claimed that he was participating in the fight against feminism, blaming women for ruining his life.
23 years later, and people are still debating what his motive was for this attack. Whatever the reason, it was clear that his frustration and anger was directed at women.
The following is a trailer for the acclaimed Polytechnique Documentary, which is based on accounts given by those who witnessed this event.
Women should not have to live in fear of male prejudice and persecution, just because they were born female instead of male. Everyone, man or women, should take a moment to reflect on what happened 23 years ago, and try to work towards a better understanding between one another so that something like this never happens again.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost loved ones during that tragic event, and to women everywhere, do not let the actions of men influence what you do with your life. Live confident, strong, and aspire to achieve great things, because you all deserve it.
